The Coffee Shop is a 3D environment made for my final school project, by Francis Lavergne.

The Coffee Shop is a 3D environment made for my final school project. The goal was to create a public place with life around it. It’s a high poly scene; I wanted to achieve high quality pictures, whatever the render time. Although the renders are realist, there is a little cartoon style into the modeling. Some shapes, like the sewer, are bigger and have exaggerated rounded corners.

I used 3ds max and Mudbox for the modeling, Maxwell for the renders and photoshop for the textures/final color look. The scene is lighted with an HDRI.

This is based on an actual Porsche 911 964, a bit cartoon in the form. I learned a lot in the process of getting the right shaders. For instance, there is sss scattering into the tires and red back lights. (The red lights would react correctly if there was an emitter inside…) The lens blur is done into Maxwell.

There is a bit of displacement into the asphalt and red building, but most of the small details appear because of the regular bump map. The grass is done with Maxwell Grass. I spent a lot of time on the leaf shader: there are maps for diffuse (at 0° & 90°), transmittance, scattering, virtual thickness, roughness, bump and weight. (And it is blend with another material to had specific highlights) It’s maybe a lot for nothing, but if there was an emitter behind a leaf, we would see the inside veins and colors of it.
